The First Meaning
The Britannica dictionary contains two definitions for the word, “legacy” which differ to a certain degree. Let’s look at this closely.
The first definition says, “legacy is a property or money received from someone who has died,” which relates to wealth. Receiving either of these or even both can do well to make your life easier because you got them at no cost.
Of course, our definition of wealth differs. Some may dream about going around the world while others fantasize about buying a house or car. In your case, wealth may be being able to send your children to college or retire at any age you desire. Be that as it may, it is still a universal truth that we all want to live comfortably, debt-free, and well-prepared for whatever the future holds.
The Second Meaning
The second definition says, “legacy is something that happened in the past or that comes from someone in the past.”
Let’s explain this better through the following sentences:
1. Her artistic legacy leaves on through her children.
2. He left his children a legacy of love and respect.
This time, the meaning does not focus on wealth. It refers to a person/s leaving tradition, values or practices behind for the people left to carry on. This is not just limited to familial level as all these can be passed on at a community and yes, even humanity, level.
Leaving a Legacy Behind
Given that you are quite comfortable in life; wouldn’t it be good if you could give back or pay your good fortune forward? Aside from leaving tradition, values or practices, you can extend the legacy you leave behind by helping even those you don’t know but are in dire need.
How? Through Charity.
Being philanthropic has advantages for both the giver and the receiver. You are not only assisting others in need, but you are also cultivating excellent character qualities and habits in yourself. Charitable work helps you to observe life through the eyes of others—their trials and tribulations, successes and strengths. Being a witness to another’s life is an honor. And being one makes you appreciate and be grateful for your own life.
However, it is less essential what words or phrases you use to characterize charity than doing some type of
action to help people in need. There are many different methods to help people. There is no
one proper method; there is only one right way for you. Click here to know what are
the types of charity that you can do for others.
