Ways of Promoting Spiritual Health

Our physical and mental health often receive a great deal of attention, but let’s not forget another aspect of our whole being: our spiritual health.

As it turns out, our mind, body, and soul are all intricately connected. So much so that the health of one person can have a big impact on the health of another. While spirituality will not heal you, it will assist you in dealing with pain and navigating difficult
life changes.

But what exactly is spiritual well-being? Is it necessary to have religious principles and beliefs, attend church services, and confess sin? Actually, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to spiritual health—it varies from person to person, and culture to culture. 

According to Carrie Wester, a chaplain with Banner Behavioral Health Hospital in Scottsdale, Arizona, there may be some individuals who encounter spirituality through religion, but this isn’t the sole instrument. She defined spirituality as “a sense of inner peace and how you connect with something more than yourself, whether it’s a higher power, music, art or mankind in general.” Spirituality is basically formed by the values and belief a person develops all throughout their life.

 

The Advantages of Spiritual Health

The advantages of being spiritual are numerous. Wester says it may give you a feeling of purpose and belonging, make you feel calmer and more conscious, and give you hope when things are not going your way.

“The most important thing is that spirituality may bring hope when there doesn’t seem to be any.” Wester explained. “Many spiritual disciplines might assist you in finding or making peace.”

While religion may bring spirituality to some people, the same doesn’t hold true for
others. So, it’s safe to say that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to spiritual
